Lay It on the Table is an historic, nonfiction popular genre written as a story, reflecting a moment in time in our national history. The book chronicles Majority Whip Tip O’Neill’s initiative and decisive leadership to give the U. S. House a unique opportunity to have its voice heard on ending U. S. military involvement in Vietnam’s unwinnable and unpopular civil war. His leadership on this issue posed great risk to O’Neill’s advancement to Speaker of the House. It demonstrated valuable lessons for today and shows how the House wrestled with the question that still echoes decades later: if Congress has the constitutional power to declare war, can’t it also declare to end war?
Presented by Linda Melconian; first woman majority leader of the Massachusetts Senate; former assistant to Speaker of the U. S. House, Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill Jr.
