By mid 1851 Herman Melville was well on his way to completing his whaling novel. At age 31 he began reading Shakespeare intensively for the first time. He read the tragedies (particularly Lear and Hamlet) and learned about soliloquies. Soon he discarded what he had written and began anew. In this show you will hear some of the magnificent musings of Ishmael, Father Mapple, Captain Peleg, Starbuck and Ahab.
