The history of the Hoosac Tunnel from 1819 to 1877. In 1819, a failed plan to link Boston to Albany and eventually the Erie Canal started the idea for a better solution. Standing in its way was a very formidable obstacle, the Hoosac Range. In 1825, the Hoosac Canal plan was proposed but failed as too long and costly. Many tried and failed until Alvah Crocker proposed the Hoosac Tunnel and successfully lobbied for the funding in 1848.
