In this talk, 2019 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition finalists Nekisha Durrett and Julianne Wallace Sterling will discuss the inspiration behind, and the process of creating, works that are currently on view in The Outwin: American Portraiture Today. Although distinct in many ways, Durrett’s James Baldwin and Sterling’s Specialist Murphy are both striking, graphic portraits that foreground their subject’s faces and make clever use of negative space. Using different media and approaches, Durrett and Sterling create portraits with presence, honoring the courageous achievements of the people they depict. The conversation will be facilitated by Maggie North, Curator of Art at the Springfield Museums.
