The classic Massachusetts yard — with its manicured lawn, non-native ornamental shrubbery and non-native trees — is a major contributor to global warming and to species collapse among insect and bird populations. But with just a few modifications, and very little material investment, we can change that picture, turning our outdoor spaces into natural oases that absorb carbon from the atmosphere and help to support pollinators, birds, and other desirable creatures.
