Vincent van Gogh created over 30 of them. Lucian Freud made more than 50. Artists’ self-portraits have taken countless forms over the centuries, functioning as sites of experimentation, invention, and introspection. This talk will explore a range of self-portraits from the Springfield Museums’ permanent collection, made by artists from Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) to Arnaldo Roche-Rabell (1955-2018). In addition to discussing interpretative questions associated with self-portraiture in general, this lecture will address how specific artists constructed their identities and images.
Presented by Maggie North, Curator of Art, Springfield Museums
