The Art-Deco style Chrysler Building in New York City was designed by William Van Alen, an architect from Brooklyn, and built by Fred T. Ley, a general contractor from Springfield, MA. Together the careers of Van Alen and Ley illustrate the revolution brought about by new materials and construction methods in the early 20th century.
