Enjoy a guided tour of the Fenimore Art Museum and the Farmer’s Museum, located on the land overlooking Lake Otsego once owned by the novelist James Fenimore Cooper. The Art Museum houses one of the country’s most comprehensive and exceptional collections of American folk art, fine art and the renowned Thaw Collection of American Indian Art representing North America’s diverse and rich cultural heritage. The Museum occupies a 1933 mansion built by Edward Severin Clark, an heir to the Singer Manufacturing Company fortune. The building was donated to the Museum by his brother, philanthropist, and art collector Stephen Carlton Clark, who also bequeathed much of the fine art and folk-art collections to the museum. Stephen later turned his brother’s farm complex across the road into The Farmers’ Museum, which features a large collection of farm tools and equipment housed in Edward’s former dairy barn. Its attractions include a village of relocated 19th-century buildings including a blacksmith’s forge and a working carousel. Our group lunch is included at the Museum’s Café.
