Walking Tour Will Highlight City Beautiful Movement

Benjamin Murphy, President of the Springfield Preservation Trust, will describe the City Beautiful Movement during a walking tour on Saturday, July 9, from 10:30 am to noon.

City Beautiful was an architecture and urban planning movement during the late-19th and early-20th centuries that encouraged beautification and monumental grandeur to promote moral and civic virtue among the urban population. Murphy will show how that related to Springfield’s Quadrangle and Court Square and review some of the grander plans for those spaces. He will also point out some other buildings and structures that are directly related to the City Beautiful movement in Springfield.

The tour is part of the Second Saturday Walking Tour series, co-sponsored by the Armoury-Quadrangle Civic Association and the Springfield Museums. Walking tour tickets may be purchased in the museum Welcome Center at 21 Edwards Street on the day of the event. Tickets are free for members of the civic association or of the museums. Tickets for non-members are $5 per person. All proceeds will go toward improvements to the neighborhood.
