The Springfield Public Schools, in partnership with the Springfield Museums, is sponsoring a Seuss in Springfield Community Project to benefit The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum during the week of February 27-March 3, 2017.
The project will take place in various schools throughout the city and include participation from pre-K through high school students. This collaborative program has been designed to help raised needed funds for The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum, while creating a sense of ownership and pride in Springfield students as they learn about the importance of philanthropy and community involvement.
Each school will be encouraged to integrate Dr. Seuss into their school curriculum to celebrate his work and his significance to Springfield. In addition, there will be an opportunity for the students and staff to participate in community fundraising efforts to support this one of a kind museum.
Springfield Superintendent of Schools Daniel Warwick said the participating schools have educational and fun activities planned. “The energy is palpable,” he said. “Our students have the distinct privilege of learning in a City that was the home of the world-famous Dr. Seuss and we never take that for granted. But every year around this time, is a special time for us to celebrate Dr. Seuss. This year, we are especially excited and honored to play a small role in contributing to the creation of The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum. We are grateful to The Springfield Museums for allowing us to be a part of this historic project.”
“We are inspired by the commitment from the Springfield Public Schools to the creation of The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum and the generosity of Springfield school children,” said Springfield Museums president Kay Simpson. “Their outstanding contribution will support our efforts to celebrate the internationally-renowned Dr. Seuss in his hometown and welcome millions of children and families to the Museum built in his honor for generations to come.”
The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum is scheduled to open in June 2017. It will be a permanent, bilingual exhibition designed to introduce children and their families to the stories of Ted Geisel, promote the joy of reading and nurture specific literacy skills. It will feature interactive exhibits, as well as a recreation of Ted Geisel’s studio.
All donations will specifically support The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum.
