Granpapa’s Ride, Currier & Ives

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Elderly man seated in a chair outside of house watching three children and dog play in front of him.

Currier & Ives published hundreds of “sentimental” prints, images that reflected the challenges and contentment found in childhood. In Grandpapa’s Ride, a grandfather good-naturedly plays with his grandchildren, two of whom pretend they are horses pulling their grandfather’s carriage. A young boy encourages the activity while the dog barks in excitement.
