The title of this image Mater Dolorosa translates to “sorrowing mother,” and refers to the suffering of Mary, mother of Jesus as a result of his crucifixion. This print shows Christ, lying across Mary’s lap, after he was removed from the Cross. Two angels surround them and two cherubs float above. Mary’s heart is shown pierced by seven swords, representing the sorrows that she endured during Jesus’ life.
