The rat terrier was bred in England in the 1820s and soon brought to the United States. The dog received its name from its skill at catching and killing rats as well as rabbits and squirrels. Rat terriers made great pets and their intelligence, energy and loving nature made them important family companions. Here the dog, Pluck, has spent the night searching for rats and has captured one that is nearly as big as he is. The burnt down candle indicates that dog has stood watch throughout the evening.
