Currier & Ives produced over 750 images related to the popular sport of horse racing. Sheepshead Bay, an American thoroughbred race track on Coney Island, was built by a group of prominent businessmen from the New York City area who formed the Coney Island Jockey Club in 1880. The track was opened in 1884 and four years later the Futurity Stakes race, with a $50,000 prize, took place on Labor Day in 1888.
