The first World’s Fair was held at The Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London in 1851. The building was made of wrought iron and glass and was approximately 1,850 feet long and 480 feet high. It was designed by Joseph Paxton and stood on that site until 1936 when it was destroyed by fire. The “Great Exhibition,” as the original World’s Fair is often referred to, was the first international exhibition in the era of industrialization. World expositions provided an opportunity for advancements in science, technology and art from around the world to be celebrated.
