Thomas Creswick painted many genre and landscape scenes. The Nearest Way in Summer Time is the only image by the artist that was reproduced by Currier & Ives. In this rural scene, a young man rides the second of four horses across a shallow stream. The last horse pulls a cart carrying two large tree trunks with a woman and her child perched on top of them. These sentimental lithographs by Currier & Ives often conveyed a carefree attitude toward farm life and chores.
