D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Driver and horse on track trotting to left in image. Driver in black suit with black cap.

Currier & Ives printed a number of harness racing portraits during the late 19th century. The firm’s enthusiasm for harness racing, coupled with public interest in the sport, resulted in the creation of many lithographs on the subject. In The Queen of the Turf MAUD S., the horse draws her sulky and driver along a country road. A river winds across the background of the scene, its banks dotted with trees.
