2008 Exhibition Schedule

Exhibits at the Springfield Museums.


January 15-June 8, 2008, Museum of Fine Arts: Extra! Extra! Currier & Ives and the Mass Media, an exhibition of hand-colored 19th-century lithographs of that represented the "photojournalism" of the day in the era before actual news photography. January 22-April 13, 2008, Museum of Fine Arts: Abstract Paintings by Douglas Deihl, an exhibit of original artwork by an expert in Native American and Western art who is well known as an appraiser on the PBS TV series, Antiques Roadshow. February 9-May 11, 2008, Springfield Science Museum: Dinosaurs! Land, Sea and Air, seven groupings of lifelike robotic dinosaurs, two extinct marine reptiles, and a flying reptile displayed in realistic environments. Interactive components include a visitor-activated robotic dinosaur "skeleton," a dinosaur fossil dig box, and two track rubbing stations. Dinosaurs include Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops with two young, Stegosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, a Tenontosaurus with three Deinonychus, Corythosaurus with a nest of hatchlings and others. February 15-November 9, 2008, Connecticut Valley Historical Museum: Blues in Our Blood: The Artistic Evolution of Taj Mahal & Carole Fredericks, photos, videos, album covers, posters and family memorabilia from the careers of these Springfield-born siblings who each became a famous performing artist. Taj Mahal is the official blues musician of Massachusetts, and the late Carole Fredericks was a famous singer in France. Through March 2, 2008, Museum of Fine Arts – Cross That Bridge: Prints from the Permanent Collection, depictions of bridges around the world from the spans crossing the Thames River to the covered bridges of Vermont. March 4-September 7, 2008, Museum of Fine Arts – Japanese Woodblock Prints, rarely seen highlights from the Raymond Bidwell collection of Japanese woodblock, including works by 18th and 19th century artists such as Hokusai, Hiroshige, Hokkei, Kuniyoshi, Kunisada, Utamar, Yoshiidu and others. will be on view. March 25-June 1, 2008, Museum of Fine Arts: Wondrous Cold: An Antarctic Journey, an Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition of 50 spectacular color and black-and-white photographs that juxtapose large panoramas of Antarctica's beauty and desolation with scenes of wildlife, people, and the abandoned huts of early explorers. Through June 29, 2008, Connecticut Valley Historical MuseumThe Mosquito Fleet: World War II PT Boats, a collection of World War II memorabilia, including uniforms, medals, photographs, and soldiers' souvenirs. Through October 26, 2008, Museum of Fine Arts – At Play: Leisure Time Portrayed in Watercolor, colorful depictions of the many ways people spent their precious fee time in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Featured artists include Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Prendergast, Paul Gauguin and others.
