Springfield Museums is excited to announce The Grinch’s Grotto has been extended by popular demand through Sunday, January 29. Located in the SIS Hall of the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History, the Grotto is a cave-like structure with a highly decorated chair for the old curmudgeon himself, in the midst of a Who-ville space with interactive stations sure to amuse the whole family.
New to the experience in January is a large sleigh and a tower of packages and holiday decorations, with the Grinch and his dog Max seated at the top. This display was created by Museum staff and local artist John Simpson, known for his work as part of City Mosaic.
Those who missed out on visiting during the Museums’ Grinchmas Celebration will still have time to greet the Grinch and take selfies and portraits. Check the Museums’ online calendar for a schedule of appearances.
“We are thrilled to extend the Grinch’s Grotto display at the Museums in response to the Grinch’s incredible popularity,” said Kay Simpson, President and CEO of the Springfield Museums. “We broke all attendance records (even pre-pandemic) for November and December, and it is clear that no one wants the Grinch to go. Our visitors have spoken, and we listened!”
The Grinch’s Grotto is from the creators of The Dr. Seuss Experience, and Dr. Seuss Enterprises; and is sponsored locally by M&T Bank.
THE GRINCH MOBILE
Ted Geisel’s Cadillac also has a place in the Grinch’s Grotto display. The 1985 Seville, the last automobile owned by the famed children’s book author, is decorated with Max’s signature horned headpiece. Its GRINCH license plate was recently featured as a clue on the popular game show Jeopardy!
Ted Geisel’s Cadillac will continue to be on view as part of the Museums’ Seuss-iversary year through June 2023.
