July 2010 Walking Tour

John Morse, president of Merriam-Webster, will lead a walking tour to the Merriam-Webster building on Federal Street on Saturday, July 10, from 10:30 am-noon.

Morse will tell the story of the company from its founding in 1831 to the present, focusing on the founders, George and Charles Merriam. The walk will include a stop at the Byers Street home of the third Merriam brother to join the firm, Homer Merriam. Morse will also talk about some of the notable dictionaries created by the Merriam brothers. The tour will end at the Merriam-Webster building, which was designed and built for the company in 1939.

The tour is part of the Second Saturday Walking Tour series, co-sponsored by the Armoury-Quadrangle Civic Association and the Springfield Museums. Walking tour tickets may be purchased in the museum Welcome Center at 21 Edwards Street on the day of the event. Tickets are free for members of the civic association or of the museums. Tickets for non-members are $5 per person. All proceeds will go toward improvements to the neighborhood. The walking tour ticket will also provide $2 off the price of an adult admission to the Springfield Museums on the day of the tour.
