I Sing My Name!, a multi-media performance by the new theatrical group Teatro Vida, will be presented on June 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. in the Davis Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts at the Quadrangle.
The performance has been scripted by a diverse youth ensemble, ages 12-18, in collaboration with poet-in-residence Maria Luisa Arroyo and artistic director Magdalena Gomez, both of Springfield. The performance is for ages 12 and up only. I Sing My Name! is Teatro Vida's creative response to an inter-generational act of violence that took place in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield in March. The performance will feature live music, video, ritual, poetry, monologues, original movement work, and song. Collaborating guest artists include composer, musician and vocalist Heshima Moja, born and raised in Springfield's South End; I-Shea, known throughout the Valley for her vocals and percussion; Julie Lichtenberg, artistic director of the Performance Project; James Lescault, executive director of Amherst Community Television; and Freddy Chapelliquen, founder and director of Markamusic. Co-founded by Magdalena Gomez and the Latino Breakfast Club, Teatro Vida is a multi-disciplinary training and performance theater for inspiring leadership and civic engagement through the arts. The project is supported with funding from the Latino Breakfast Club, MassMutual Financial Group, Hispanic Resources, Inc., and Baystate Health. Tickets are $5 per person, and seating is general admission. The performance will last one hour with no intermission. Late-comers will not be seated. Light refreshments will be served following each performance. Call 413.263.6800, ext. 255, for advance tickets.
