Museum’s Dinosaur Leads Campaign for Donations of Knitwear

The Springfield Science Museum’s life-size replica of Tyrannosaurus rex is sporting a warm winter scarf this season.

The gigantic knitting project was coordinated by a group of knitters who call themselves “Riot Prrl.”  About 10 people contributed sections of the dinosaur’s scarf, which is at least 34 feet long. The members of Riot Prrl are “yarn bombers,” which means they knit large, whimsical things for public places, often to draw attention to a cause.

In this case the cause is a campaign to collect knitted scarves, mittens and hats which will be donated to the shelter for women and children run by the YWCA in Springfield. Donations will be accepted at the Springfield Museums’ Welcome Center through January 29.
