Museums Plan April Vacation Week Activities

"Swamp Things" will be the theme of April school vacation week activities at the Springfield Museums. The museums will be open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday, April 17 through Friday, April 21. (Science Museum open until 5 p.m.) Activities are free with the price of admission to the Museums unless noted.


April school vacation week programs are sponsored in part by a grant from the Springfield Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Daily at the Science Museum: – Prospect for gemstones and fossils in the Rushing River Sluice (additional fee) – Visit the special exhibit Earth Attacks: Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis ($3 fee) – View art made by elementary school students as part of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra's Firebird project. – Meet a costumed dinosaur, 11 a.m. – See some live vernal pool creatures, noon-3:45 p.m. – "The Heat Is On," an interactive skit about volcanoes, 12:15 & 2 p.m. Monday, April 17 – Wacky Nature: Natural Disasters – "The Power of Nature: Stories of Natural Disasters" by storyteller Rona Leventhal, 1 p.m., Museum of Fine Arts – Make weather-inspired art, noon-3:30 p.m., G.W.V. Smith Art Museum Tuesday, April 18 – Pond Scum: Algae and Plants – "Nature in Action" by storyteller Jackson Gillman, 1 p.m., Museum of Fine Arts – Make a baggie garden to grow at home, noon-3:30 p.m., G.W.V. Smith Art Museum Wednesday, April 19 – Reptile Kingdom: Swamp Dwellers – "Earth Rhythms: Songs for the Environment" by musician Roger Tincknell, 1 p.m., Museum of Fine Arts – Join a dinosaur dig, noon-3:30 p.m., G.W.V. Smith Art Museum Thursday, April 20 – Leave it to Beaver – "Animals of the Wetlands" – Nature photographer Mark Picard demonstrates his amazing swamp raft, used to photograph swamp animals, 1 p.m., Museum of Fine Arts – Make a moose mask, noon-3:30 p.m., G.W.V. Smith Art Museum Friday, April 21 – Stop Bugging Me!
