Steampunk Springfield: Re-Imagining an Industrial City will kick-off in spectacular fashion with an Opening Soiree on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. Like the project itself, the evening promises to be engaging, multi-faceted, and provocative. The event is sponsored in part by Ideal Insurance.
Highlights include a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by guest curator Bruce Rosenbaum, and the unveiling of the three primary exhibits, including the twelve large-scale “Humachines” created by Rosenbaum and featuring the Victorian era’s greatest minds transformed into the futuristic inventions they envisioned. The evening’s entertainment will be provided by Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys, described as “musically sophisticated and immensely talented…a Dada-esque circus carnival run amuck” by the Boston Survival Guide.
The evening will also include hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar inside the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum and dinner and desert among the exhibits at the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History. Gifts bags will be distributed to the first 100 guests.
Tickets are $50 for Museum members and $60 for nonmembers. Advance reservations are required through springfieldmuseums.org or by phone at 413.263.6800, ext. 259.
Additional events related to the Steampunk Springfield project will also be hosted by the Museums and other partner organizations, including the Springfield Armory National Historic Site and CityStage & Symphony Hall, among others. A full listing of events is available at facebook.com/SteampunkSpringfieldMA.
Steampunk Springfield is sponsored by Merriam-Webster, Peerless Precision and AAA of Pioneer Valley, with additional support from media sponsors The Valley Advocate/Preview Magazine, WRSI 93.9, and media partner ArtScope Magazine.
Originated in the 1980’s, the term “Steampunk” describes a fantasy world where steam-powered technology of the Victorian era merges with elements of contemporary time. Steampunk has since grown into an artistic and design subculture combining science fiction, history, fantasy and technology.
