Each fall, the Springfield Museums pay tribute to Springfield’s role in transportation history at the annual “History on the Move” Car Show. The twelfth annual event will take place on Saturday, September 12, from 9 am to 3 pm on the Quadrangle green. A wide assortment of vintage early automobiles will be displayed, including many pre-1950 cars and an assortment of vintage automobiles manufactured in Springfield. The event is sponsored by AAA Pioneer Valley; MassMutual is the 2015 Premier Sponsor of the Springfield Museums.
Attendees can also enjoy the transportation exhibits at the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History, which was recently honored by Yankee Magazine in their “Best of New England” issue for the best car and motorcycle museum in Massachusetts. The exhibits include two Springfield-built Rolls-Royces, an 1899 three-wheeled Knox and a 1903 Stevens-Duryea, the oldest surviving model of its kind, all made in Springfield. Also on view is the Wood Museum’s famous collection of Springfield-built Indian Motocycles and an experimental roadster made by the Indian company.
Ongoing activities that day are scheduled to include driving demonstrations of a replica of the Springfield-built 1893 Duryea, the first successful gasoline-powered car. There will also be an awards ceremony for Best in Show and People’s Choice. Lunches and snacks will be available in the Blake House Café, and music will also be provided by a DJ.
Admission to the event is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 3-17, and includes access to exhibits at the Wood Museum of Springfield History as well (no discounts apply). For those wishing to have access to all four Museum buildings as well as the Car Show, general admission is $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and college students, $9.50 for children ages 3-17. Admission to the event and the museums is always free for Museum members; Springfield residents receive free museum admission with proof of residency (does not include Car Show access).
