Music lovers can immerse themselves in opera this fall by attending a New York City opera premiere and a Sunday afternoon series of opera on film at the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts.
Guy McLain, an accomplished musician, will lead a bus tour to New York on Sunday, September 16, to see the premiere of Margaret Gardner, a new opera based on the Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison's book, Beloved. The music is written by Richard Danielpour, one of the best living American composers. Participants will have free time in the city following the matinee performance. The cost of the trip is $184. The film series will feature Verdi's La Traviata, Puccini's Madame Butterfly, and Mozart's Magic Flute. Programs are scheduled for September 30, October 21, and November 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. McLain will introduce each program and complimentary refreshments will be offered at intermission. Advance registration is required. The cost is $60 for the series or $22 for a single presentation. Museum members receive a discount on all museum trips and courses.
