Exhibit Traces the History of State Street

The story of State Street, from its Revolutionary War-era origins as the “Boston Post Road,” to its current transformation sparked by construction of the new Federal Courthouse, is being told in the exhibition and documentary The State Street Corridor Project: Road to Renewal. The exhibit will open on Sunday, May 23, with a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. at the new Museum of Springfield History at the Quadrangle. A short preview of the documentary produced by WBGY Public Television for Western New England will accompany the exhibit.

Brick Artist Transforms Toy LEGO® Bricks into Art

If you build it, they will come. And New York artist Nathan Sawaya has built some amazing sculptures out of common LEGO® building bricks. The Art of the Brick, an exhibition of Sawaya’s work, will be on view from June 16 through September 5 at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts at the Quadrangle.

Walking Tour to Highlight Art Deco Architecture

Local historian and retired city planner Robert McCarroll will lead a walking tour to see Springfield’s Art Deco-style buildings on Saturday, May 8, from 10:30 am to noon. The tour will begin at the Springfield Museums.

Museums Name New President

Museums Name New President

The Board of Trustees of the Springfield Museums, at its meeting late yesterday, appointed Holly Smith-Bové as the new president of the Museums, effective May 1. Smith-Bové succeeds Joseph Carvalho who is retiring after 34 years at the organization and 16 years as its president.

The Springfield Science Museum’s large rooftop telescope will be open for public sky-gazing on Friday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. The program will be held rain or shine. If it is overcast, a planetarium show will be presented in place of telescope viewing.
