The Springfield Museums have planned a week of family fun during February school vacation. “Rockin’ Reptiles Week” activities will be offered Monday, Feb. 21, through Friday, Feb. 25, from 10 am-5 pm and are free with museum admission unless noted.
Programs have been planned in conjunction with Reptiles: The Beautiful and the Deadly, a special exhibit of more than 20 exotic live reptiles from around the world. The exhibit is sponsored by United Bank.
Performances, 1 pm
- Monday, Feb. 21 – Laser Safari by Prismatic Magic – Explore two laser-constructed ecosystems (African Savannah and Brazilian Rainforest) and their most unusual creatures.
- Tuesday, Feb. 22 – The Around-the-World Adventures of Speedy the Rabbit by Talking Hands Theatre – It's the tortoise v. the hare and the race is on! Speedy the Rabbit is so sure he'll win that he's taking the long way – all the way around the world. As he passes through Russia, Ethiopia, and India, he meets people who tell him about their culture and try to get him to slow down and stop for a cup of tea.
- Wednesday, Feb. 23 – Premium Live Animal Show by Animal Adventures – Meet eight to ten live reptiles plus some additional exotic animals.
- Thursday, Feb. 24 – Reptile Program by Rainforest Reptile Shows – Alligators, turtles and snakes, oh my!
- Friday, Feb. 25 – Toe Jam Variety Show by the Toe Jam Puppet Band – Interactive songs and stories including a barn dance, a flying laundry song, and a car wash song where the kids get spritzed with water!
Ongoing Activities
- Family Science Adventures, 10 am-noon – Discover the wonders of science through hands-on activities.
- Scavenger Hunts, 11 am-3:45 pm – Explore the galleries and locate things in the art and history museums.
- Planetarium Shows, 11:15 am, noon, 1& 2 pm – Embark on an outer space adventure (additional fee).
- Art Activities, 11:30 am-3 pm – Make a foam snake or a magic scratch crocodile.
- Roving Live Reptile Demonstrations, noon-1 pm
- Art Activities, noon-3:45 pm – Make a snake mobile, play gallery games, and try on costumes.
Special Exhibits
- Reptiles: The Beautiful and the Deadly, more than 20 exotic live reptiles from around the world ($5 special exhibit fee for all visitors ages 3 and up in addition to museum admission.)
- Robots: The Interactive Exhibition, an exhibit based on the movie Robots! ($5 special exhibition fee for all visitors ages 3 and up in addition to museum admission.)
Note: A combination ticket to see both special exhibits is $7.50.
