Choose your adventure this summer at the Springfield Museums.
Family fun is in store for visitors to the Springfield Museums from July 5 through August 11 during "Ancient Adventures," six-weeks of live performances, hands-on art workshops, science experiments, and storytelling highlighting a different ancient culture each week. "Ancient Adventures" programs have been planned in conjunction with the opening of the new Ancient Treasures gallery in the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum. "Ancient Adventures" programs are sponsored by Bank of America and the Eugene A. Dexter Charitable Fund through the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. Activities are free with the price of museum admission unless noted. Daily, Tuesday through Friday: Ongoing – Go on a scavenger hunt through the new gallery and win a prize. Noon-3:30 p.m. – Make take-home crafts and meet costumed characters from ages past. Noon-3:45 p.m. – Hands-on Family Science Adventures 1, 2 & 3 p.m. – Planetarium shows (additional fee) Noon- 4 p.m. – Try on costumes and make "ancient art." Week of July 5-7 – Explore Ancient Mesopotamia Wednesday, July 5 12:30 p.m., Museum of Fine Arts – The Crescent Dancers perform Middle Eastern dances. Noon-3:30 p.m. – Make a ziggurat, a sacred Sumerian pyramid. Thursday, July 6 Noon-3:30 p.m. – Make a Gula stick puppet and try writing in ancient Sumerian cuneiform. Friday, July 7 12:30 p.m., Museum of Fine Arts – The Tanglewood Marionettes perform An Arabian Adventure with beautiful large sized puppets. Noon-3:30 p.m. – Make a Babylonian necklace and try writing in cuneiform.
