The Perfect Birthday Gift for Dr. Seuss: Reaching the Specialty License Plate Goal!

Dr. Seuss would be turning 120 on March 2 – and what better way to celebrate than with a Massachusetts license plate honoring his legacy!

Several years ago, the Springfield Museums launched a campaign to offer a Dr. Seuss specialty license plate to Massachusetts drivers. Orders have come in slowly but consistently since then, but now the finish line is in sight: The Museums need just 46 more orders to hit 750, which is the minimum required by the Registry of Motor Vehicles to begin production of a specialty plate.

“We think this would be the perfect way to honor Dr. Seuss – aka Theodor Geisel, who was a Springfield native – for his 120th birthday, which is March 2, 2024,” said Kay Simpson, President and CEO of the Springfield Museums.

“We are 94% of the way there!” she added. “We invite anyone who’s ever contemplated getting a Dr. Seuss plate to place their orders now, so we can hit 750 by his birthday!”

The specialty plates cost $40 (in addition to standard vehicle-registration fees), and a portion of that $40 goes to support the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum.

“Who doesn’t smile when they see the Cat in the Hat?” asked Rep. Carlos Gonzalez, D-10th Hampden. “This iconic plate would not only celebrate Dr. Seuss’s literary contributions, but also remind us of the joy, imagination, and inspiration he continues to bring to generations.

“Let’s proudly display this plate on our vehicles, spreading the magic of Dr. Seuss’s world wherever we go!” he added.

Once the 750-order minimum is reached, the Museums will contact those who placed orders, to thank them for their patience and to explain next steps.

“Millions of people have found true joy in reading and learning, thanks to Dr. Seuss,” said Sen. Adam Gomez, D-Hampden. “These license plates are a wonderful and very visible tribute to his genius – and a reminder of his roots right here in Springfield.”
