Stored on a shelf for over 100 hundred years, a rare anthropological treasure was recently discovered in the Springfield Science Museum’s permanent collections. Originally cataloged as an “Aleutian hat,” the artifact had been preserved in museum collections for over a century before being identified last month as a war helmet from the Tlingit people of Alaska. Beautifully carved and with much of the original paint still visible, the helmet is one of a relatively small number in existence worldwide. Dave Stier, Director of the Springfield Science Museum, and Dr. Ellen Savulis, Curator of Anthropology, Springfield Science Museum explain more about this exciting discovery
