FREE Two-day Workshop
Learn to guide your students through the process of designing, implementing, and analyzing field investigations conducted in the outdoors. During this workshop, teachers will implement this process by conducting a field investigation to determine stream water quality based on the aquatic insect (macroinvertebrate) species present. Back in the classroom, teachers will learn how to analyze large data sets using Excel and how to use the program to visually represent data through tables and graphs. There is an opportunity to earn Professional Development Points for participating in this workshop. Most appropriate for grades 7-12.

Day One: Tuesday, June 28
Springfield Science Museum, 21 Edwards Street, Springfield, MA.
Teachers will learn how to design and implement scientific field investigations. As an example, teachers will conduct a field investigation to determine stream water quality based on the presence of aquatic macroinvertebrate species. Macroinvertebrate samples will be taken into the classroom and analyzed to introduce teachers to this fun, hands-on method of examining water quality in the field.
Wednesday, June 29
Abbey Brook Restoration Area and the Springfield Renaissance School, 1170 Carew Street, Springfield, MA.
Teachers will spend the morning conducting their field investigations at the Abbey Brook Restoration Site, which abuts the Springfield Renaissance School. In the afternoon, we will analyze the data using Excel and create tables and graphs to visually represent the data.
Optional: Boxed lunch from the Blake House Cafe
Sandwich served with lettuce and tomato. Includes bottled water, chips and an apple. $10 per day.
