This workshop will focus on the strategies for successful paintings, with a particular focus on the landscape. Preparations and practices that will help enhance your painting experience, both in the studio and when you venture into the “world” to sketch and paint in plein air. What are the benefits of this practice, the challenges and obstacles, and how to best meet and benefit from them.
Join renowned painter Robert Masla who will facilitate this workshop experience. We will learn about foundational principles and be using the landscape to explore a variety of sketching and painting techniques to develop atmosphere, mood and dynamic compositions. We will use “sketch and wash pencils” for different kinds of “thumbnails” and value studies to create the illusion of our 3-dimensional observations onto a 2-dimensional surface. Masla will demonstrate how to apply paint to create texture, and how shape, line, value and color can unify a painting. We will learn about the dynamics of design, and the use of atmospheric and linear perspective and how to use bright vivid colors for impact. Paint in the medium of your choice. Masla will demo in watercolor and gouache but is versatile in all painting media.
It is important to remember, this is a learning and fun environment, we are not trying to create masterpieces, but learning and growing and enjoying the process! Some experience recommended, supply list provided. Plan to bring or purchase a lunch.
