The Basics of Plein Air Painting in all Media

September 19, 2025 @ 10:00 am3:00 pm
| Cost: $100 | Cost for Members: $85

En Plein Air painting – to paint out doors, directly from life, is the fastest way to learn and grow as a painter. There is no substitute for painting from life and learning from nature. Photographs lie, and one will not thoroughly understand the effects of light, shadow, atmosphere and so many gross and subtle factors, till you have painting in the great outdoor studio. Certainly this can be a challenge, time is limited, as the light and scene is constantly changing, forcing you to edit and compress your knowledge into a passionate attempt to capture the essence of what you experience. But this is about process, stretching, growing -not the finished product. Whatever you learn in the plein air experience will only enhance your studio practice and art making.

Learn the secrets professional artists use to capture the essence of the landscape. Masla will share philosophies, techniques and methods that will help you to meet the challenges, increase your speed and accuracy in rendering the subject, and your reaction to it, as well as tools to create an expressive and dynamic painting. Masla will work with solvent free Cobra water mixable oils. This class will be held outside on the Museums’ grounds, weather permitting. Students can work in the medium of their choice. Supply list provided.
