In the Harbor, Currier & Ives

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Harbor scene, with one large masted ship at center and several others surrounding it.

During the 1850s, when clipper ships were popular, Currier & Ives produced more than 75 images with the maritime theme. Built largely to satisfy the urge for speed and without much concern for cargo capacity, clipper ships had a celebrated but short-lived career. They captivated America for only a few years as steamboats replaced wind-powered boats.
