The Springfield Science Museum and the Springfield Stars Club will celebrate the historic Apollo moon landings of four decades ago on Friday, March 2, at 7:30 pm.

Ed Faits, president of the Arunah Hill Natural Science Center in Cummington, Mass., will present “One Small Step,” a look back at Project Apollo, the greatest engineering achievement of all time.

Participants also will have an opportunity to examine authentic moon rocks and lunar soil samples collected by the Apollo astronauts that are on loan from NASA, courtesy of Skip Price, professor of geology and astronomy at Greenfield Community College.

Observing through the museum’s large rooftop telescope will follow, weather permitting.

Stars Over Springfield observatory programs are offered on the first Friday of each month from September through May. The program features an introductory program on topics such as space exploration, seasonal sights of the night sky, current astronomical research, or an explanation of events such as an eclipse or the appearance of a comet.

The programs are best suited for families with children ages 8 and older, however younger children are also welcome. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children 17 and under.
