In Conversation with Ben Swan: A Legacy of Advocacy and Public Service

Join African Hall Committee members Denise Jordan, Helen Caulton Harris, and Andrew Cade for a conversation with retired State Representative Ben Swan, reflecting on his career in public service, his civil rights advocacy, and his lasting impact on the Springfield community.

Special thanks to Focus Springfield for capturing and preserving this meaningful discussion.

Benjamin Swan is a community activist and former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Born in Belzoni, Mississippi, he built a career in public service and advocacy, particularly here in Springfield, where he served as president of the local NAACP.

Swan represented the 11th Hampden District from 2009 to 2016, focusing on issues affecting his constituents and the broader community. Before his legislative career, he worked as a management and education consultant and was active in local politics, including runs for mayor of Springfield in the early 1990s.

Known for his independent positions, Swan occasionally broke with his colleagues on high-profile votes, reflecting his long-standing commitment to community advocacy and public service.
