Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has reappointed Joseph Carvalho, president and executive director of the Springfield Museums, to the board of directors of the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities (MFH). Carvalho is one of only six of the foundation's 25 board members who are appointed by the governor.
The MFH is the state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, from which it receives partial funding. The foundation uses history, literature, philosophy, and other humanities disciplines to enhance and improve civic life throughout the Commonwealth. In his appointment letter, Governor Patrick stated, "Lieutenant Governor Murray and I appreciate your willingness to serve the Commonwealth in this capacity. Your experience and sound judgment will contribute substantially to the Foundation." Carvalho's term will expire in February 2010.
