Lecture to Examine Depictions of African Americans in Currier & Ives Prints

The Currier & Ives lecture series at the Museum of Fine Arts will continue on March 19 at 2 p.m. with Emancipation Day: Postbellum Visions of African Americans in Currier & Ives' Darktown Prints. The talk will be presented by James Smethurst, associate professor in the W.E.B. DuBois Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

The African Hall Subcommittee of the Springfield Museums is seeking nominations for the 15th annual Ubora Award. The award is presented to an African American individual who has demonstrated a commitment to the Springfield community and exhibited excellence in the fields of science, education, humanities or the arts. Nominations must be received by March 31, 2006.

New Springfield History Museum Made Possible by Connecticut Entrepreneur

The Springfield Museums have received a gift of $1,000,000 from Mr. Allen Swift of West Hartford to purchase the Verizon building at 85 Chestnut Street in Springfield for the purpose of creating a new history museum. Swift also donated his 1928, one-owner, Springfield-built Rolls-Royce automobile to form the basis of the new museum's transportation collection.

Museum Exhibit Explores Nature's Fury

Following the devastating tsunami that hit Indonesia in December 2004, the violent hurricanes which destroyed vast sections of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida, and the horrific earthquake in Pakistan, concern about natural disasters has soared. The Springfield Science Museum will explore the causes and effects of some of the disastrous events that plague our planet in the special exhibition Earth Attacks: Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis, on view at the museum from February 18 through September 3, 2006.
