Springfield Museums Announce Lecture and Tour Schedule for March

Each month, The Springfield Museums offer visitors a variety of lectures and gallery tours. On Thursdays, the popular Museums à la Carte lectures are held at 12:15 pm in the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts. Admission is $4 ($2 for members of the Springfield Museums), and visitors are invited to bring lunch to enjoy during the program. Cookies and coffee are provided; the programs are sponsored by Big Y World Class Market. This month’s lectures include:

Monthly Astronomy Program at Museums

The Springfield Science Museum’s large rooftop telescope will be open for public sky-gazing on Friday, March 1 at 7:30 pm. The program will be held rain or shine. If it is cloudy, a planetarium show will be presented in place of telescope viewing.

On Saturday, March 2, the Springfield Museums will host their annual Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration from 10 am-4 pm. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield on March 2, 1904. The celebration is part of the Museums’ Weekend Family Fun series, which is sponsored by TD Bank through the TD Charitable Foundation. Activities are free with museum admission unless otherwise noted.

The African Hall Subcommittee of the Springfield Museums is seeking nominations for the 5th annual Ahadi Youth Award and 22nd annual Ubora Award. The African Hall Subcommittee is a volunteer group comprised of educators, business people and community leaders from the African-American community. The nomination deadline for both awards is March 31, 2013.

Museums Invite Families to “Feel The Beat!” During February Vacation

The Springfield Museums have announced their slate of activities for the upcoming school vacation week, February 18-23. The week-long program, titled Feel The Beat!, is tied thematically to the Museums’ current GUITAR exhibition, and will feature a range of musical activities as well as concerts by top-tier children’s performers, including “Mister Steve” from PBS KIDS. As always, the week’s events will also include educational demonstrations, planetarium shows, and hands-on art opportunities as well. Activities are free with the price of museum admission unless noted otherwise.

On Sunday, February 10, The Springfield Museums will present a lecture titled Les Paul's New Sound: Re-imagining the Electric Guitar in 1950s America by Steve Waksman, author and associate professor of music and American studies at Smith College. The lecture which will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the Davis Auditorium of the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, in conjunction with the Museums’ current exhibit, GUITAR: The Instrument That Rocked the World. The talk is free with Museum admission.

Museum Store to Hold Valentine’s Shopping Night on February 5

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, The Museum Store at the Springfield Museums will hold a special Valentine’s Shopping Night on Tuesday, February 5 from 5–8 pm. For that evening only, Museum members will be able to take 20% off one item, with nonmembers allowed one item at 10% off. Shoppers can enjoy complimentary wine and cheese, and gift wrapping is always provided at no charge.
