Scholarships to be Awarded in Memory of P.F.C. Markus J. Johnson

The Connecticut Valley Historical Museum will be the host site of the second annual Markus J. Johnson Memorial Fund scholarship award ceremony on Thursday, June 1, at 5:30 p.m.

The college scholarship fund was established by the family of P.F.C. Johnson, the first Springfield soldier to die while serving in Iraq. Scholarships to attend Springfield Technical Community College are given to students in the Springfield Public Schools. The fund is administered by the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. The ceremony, which takes place on the second anniversary of Johnson's death, will include a procession by the ROTC Color Guard of Central High School, a musical performance, remarks by family members and elected officials, a DVD presentation and display about Johnson, and the presentation of four scholarships.
