The Springfield Museums at the Quadrangle are recruiting volunteer docents to lead tours and programs for children and adults in the Museum of Fine Arts or the Springfield Science Museum.
The word docent comes from the Latin word docere, meaning "to teach." No experience in art, science or education is necessary to become a docent, just an interest in art or natural history and working with the public, especially children. Docent training classes at both museums will begin September 26. Classes for the Museum of Fine Arts will be held Tuesday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. and will offer a college-quality art history education based on the museum's paintings, sculptures and decorative arts. Classes for the Science Museum will be held Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m.-noon and will focus on the museum's exhibit halls, dioramas and live animal displays. Volunteer docents receive free admission to the Museums and to Museums à la Carte programs, plus discounts on Museum School courses, trips, and Museum Store purchases.
