Museums Offer Veterans, Active Military Free Admission on Veteran’s Day
In honor of Veteran’s Day, the Springfield Museums is offering free general admission to active duty military and veterans on Wednesday, November 11. At the time of entry, visitors who show a military ID documenting that they are active duty, retired, or reserve from Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, or National Guard will receive free general admission covering all four museums. Veterans who left military service before retirement can bring a copy of their honorable discharge paperwork (DD Form 214). (Extra fees for special programs like planetarium shows may apply.)
Museums Announce Stars Program for November
The Springfield Science Museum’s large rooftop telescope will be open for public sky gazing on Friday, November 6 at 7:30 pm as part of the “Stars Over Springfield” observatory series. These programs are organized by the Museum and the Springfield Stars Club, and take place on the first Friday of each month.
Irish Famine Lecture Leads Museum Lecture Schedule for November
The Springfield Museums’ November tour and lecture schedule features a wide range of speakers and topics, most notably a special lecture on Sunday, November 8 by Maureen O’Rourke Murphy, the Joseph L. Dionne Professor of Teaching, Literacy, and Leadership at Hofstra University.
Museum School Course Registration Underway
The Museum School at the Springfield Museums is currently offering courses and experiential learning opportunities for both children and adults. Spaces are still available for fall courses and trips – gift certificates are also available, and make unique and memorable gifts during the holidays. Museums Seeking Entries for Annual Gingerbread House Competition
The Springfield Museums are inviting bakeries, schools, individual bakers and young people to submit design plans for the annual gingerbread house competition and exhibit. This year’s theme is “A Seussian Holiday,” with houses to be unveiled on November 27 as part of the Museums’ “Holiday Happenings” event.
Springfield Museums To Hold Family Fiesta Day to Celebrate Hispanic Culture
The Springfield Museums will host a Family Fiesta Day on Saturday, Oct. 17, featuring performances of traditional music and folk tales from Puerto Rico along with hands-on activities, exhibits of photographs and handcrafted musical instruments, and a special documentary screening. The Fiesta is being presented as part Herencia Latina 2015-16, a nine-month Pioneer-Valley-wide exploration of Latino history and culture in the Pioneer Valley and beyond being organized by Pioneer Valley History Network. The event is also part of the Museums’ Family Fun series, which is funded by the TD Charitable Foundation.
Museums Announce October Lectures, Tours
The Springfield Museums’ October tour and lecture schedule features a wide range of speakers and topics, including a special lecture on Sunday, October 25 by Scott Schweigert, curator of art and civilization at the Reading Public Museum. His talk, American Impressionism through the Lens of the Artists’ Colonies, explores the effect of the art colony movement on the resident artists’ creative expression. The lecture takes place at 3 pm at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, and is free with museum admission.
Museums Announce New Trustees at Annual Meeting
On September 16, the Springfield Museums welcomed two new Trustees at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Corporators and the Organizational Meeting of the Board of Trustees.
Museums Host Viewing of Total Lunar Eclipse on September 27
The Springfield Science Museum will host two opportunities to view the heavens in the coming weeks, including a special viewing of the total lunar eclipse on Sunday, September 27. Eclipses of this type are rare – the next such occurrence won’t take place for another 4 years, and the moon’s close proximity to the earth makes the event even more unusual.
Museums Offer Free Admission on Museum Day Live!
The Springfield Museums will once again open their doors free of charge on Saturday, September 26, 2015, as part of Smithsonian Magazine’s eleventh annual Museum Day Live! On that day, the Museums and a host of others across the United States will emulate the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington-based facilities by offering free admission to those who download a Museum Day Live! ticket.
