Museums Announce Lectures for June
The Springfield Museums’ monthly tour and lecture schedule continues in June with the popular Thursday Museums à la Carte lectures, held weekly at 12:15 p.m. in the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts. Admission is $4 ($2 for members of the Springfield Museums); visitors are invited to bring a bag lunch (cookies and coffee are provided). The programs are sponsored by Big Y World Class Market. Museums Announce June Culture & Cocktails Event
On Thursday, June 4 from 5-8 pm, the Springfield Museums will present their final Culture & Cocktails event of the 2014-15 season at the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum.
Museums to Hold Society of William Rice Dinner
On Thursday, May 28, the Springfield Museums will hold their thirty-fifth annual dinner for members of the Society of William Rice at 6:00 PM in the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum.
Curious George Kicks Off Summer Exhibits at Springfield Museums
The insatiable curiosity of Curious George – the little monkey who has captured the imaginations and hearts of millions for close to 75 years – comes to life May 23, 2015 at the Springfield Museums. The new exhibit, Curious George: Let’s Get Curious! will introduce young children to Curious George’s world and lead visitors on a fun, meaningful interactive math, science and engineering-based adventure. The exhibit will be on view at the Springfield Science Museum through September 6, and is designed primarily for children ages 3-7 and their parents.

Museums to Display Works by Local Students
The Springfield Museums will host a community art show featuring creations by local students in grades 5 through 12. Life’s Impressions will be on view in the Special Exhibit Gallery of the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts from Saturday, May 9 through Sunday, May 17; the show is free with general admission. The exhibition is funded, in part, by the Michele and Donald D’Amour Fund, established in 2008 to bring world class art exhibitions to the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts.
Museums Announce April Vacation Programs
The Springfield Museums have announced their lineup of activities for the upcoming school vacation week, starting with their annual Earth Day Festival on Sunday, April 19, followed by their Puppet Festival from April 20–24.
Museums Exhibit Explores Age of Victorian Opulence
On April 7, the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History will unveil a new exhibit titled Victorian Opulence: Springfield’s Industrial Elite. This exhibit, which runs through April 10, 2016, features a representative selection of the kinds of luxury and everyday items that would be found in the typical upper-class Victorian home, while also exploring the lives and values of many of these prominent families.
Festival of Flowers Returns to Springfield Museums
The coming of spring also brings the return of the Springfield Museums ’ annual Festival of Flowers, April 9-12, 2015. This year’s celebration will feature nearly 50 objects from the art, history and science collections creatively interpreted by local florists, designers, and garden club members. The festival returned in 2012 after a hiatus and has quickly become one of the most anticipated events of the Museums’ calendar.
Springfield to Open New Museum Honoring Dr. Seuss
Given the worldwide impact of Dr. Seuss’ work, it’s hard to believe that there is no museum in his honor. That is set to change in 2016, when the Springfield Museums will open the first museum dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of Springfield native Theodor Seuss Geisel.
Museums to Celebrate T. rex's 40th Birthday
On Friday, April 3, the Springfield Museums will mark the 40th anniversary of their T. rex’s arrival at the Springfield Science Museum with a special day-long program titled Spring Fling: Happy Birthday, T. rex! The 20-foot high replica was created by the famed Louis Paul Jonas Studios in Hudson, N.Y, and was purchased in 1975 with funds raised from a children’s walk-a-thon. All activities and shows are free with museum admission unless noted otherwise.
Nominees Being Sought for Annual Ubora and Ahadi Awards
The African Hall Subcommittee of the Springfield Museums is seeking nominations for the 24th annual Ubora Award and the 6th annual Ahadi Youth Award. The African Hall Subcommittee is a volunteer group comprised of educators, business people and community leaders from the African-American community. The nomination deadline for both awards is March 31, 2015.
