The Springfield Museums have announced their monthly tour and lecture schedule for November. The month’s offerings will feature a special two-lecture series titled “Downton at the Museums,” featuring historical insight into the popular PBS series.
Springfield Museums Offer Night of “Artistic and Culinary Expressions”
The Springfield Museums’ Culture & Cocktails series continues with a special evening titled “Artistic and Culinary Expressions” on Thursday, November 6 from 5-8 pm at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts.
Springfield Museums to Display Rare Japanese Woodblock Prints, Snow Globes
Later this month, the Springfield Museums will unveil an exhibit combining Japanese woodblock prints depicting winter scenes with a collection of rare and whimsical snow globes from the past century. The exhibit, titled Let it Snow: Winter Scenes in Snow Globes and Japanese Prints, will be on view at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts from October 28, 2014–January 4, 2015.
Museums Annouce Stars Program for October
The Springfield Science Museum’s large rooftop telescope will be open for public sky gazing on Friday, October 3 at 7:30 pm as part of the “Stars Over Springfield” observatory series. These programs are organized by the Museum and the Springfield Stars Club, and take place on the first Friday of each month.
Springfield Museums Announce Lecture and Tour Schedule for October
The Springfield Museums’ monthly tour and lecture schedule continues in October with the popular Thursday Museums à la Carte lectures, held weekly at 12:15 pm in the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts. Admission is $4 ($2 for members of the Springfield Museums); visitors are invited to bring lunch (cookies and coffee are provided). The programs are sponsored by Big Y World Class Market. Culture & Cocktails Series Returns in 2014
The Springfield Museums will kick-off its fifth season of Culture & Cocktails with their annual Oktoberfest: The Art of the Brew event on Thursday, October 2, 2014 from 5–8 pm at the Merrie and Lyman Wood Museum of Springfield History. The event is $5 for members, $15 for nonmembers, and includes tastings of all brews. Oktoberfest is sponsored by TD Bank and Business West. The media sponsor for the Culture & Cocktails series is The Republican/Masslive.
Steampunk Wheelchair Arrives at Museums
As the groundbreaking Steampunk Springfield exhibition approaches its conclusion at the Springfield Museums, guest curator Bruce Rosenbaum has produced one more surprise from his bag of Steampunk magic tricks.
Museums Host Exhibit by Edgardo Abello
Next month, a new exhibit of paintings and drawings by Somers, Connecticut-based artist Edgardo Abello will open in the Starr Watercolor Gallery at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibit, which is part of the Springfield Museums’ third annual celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, runs from September 9, 2014 through January 4, 2015, and is sponsored by The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts, the Eugene A. Dexter Charitable Fund administered by Bank of America, Trustee, and in part, by the Art Angels.
Museums Observatory Program Returns Next Month
The Springfield Science Museum’s large rooftop telescope will be re-open for public sky gazing on Friday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the “Stars Over Springfield” observatory series. These programs are organized by the Museum and the Springfield Stars Club, and take place on the first Friday of each month. Each event features an introductory talk on topics such as space exploration, seasonal sights of the night sky, current astronomical research, or upcoming events like eclipses or comet appearances.
Jay Griffin to Receive 2014 Ubora Award
The African Hall Subcommittee of the Springfield Museums will present the 23rd annual Ubora Award to Jerald Jay Griffin at a ceremony on Saturday, September 20, at 6 pm, at the Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts at the Quadrangle. The Ubora Award, named for the Swahili word for “excellence,” is presented to an African-American who has made a significant contribution to the greater Springfield area.
Museums to Host Annual “History on the Move” Car Show
Each fall, the Springfield Museums pay tribute to Springfield’s role in transportation history with their annual “History on the Move” Car Show. The eleventh annual event will take place on Saturday, September 6, from 9 am to 3 pm on the museum grounds at the Quadrangle. A wide assortment of muscle cars and vintage early automobiles will be displayed, including many pre-1980 cars and an assortment of vintage automobiles manufactured in Springfield. This year’s Car Show is sponsored by AAA of Pioneer Valley.
American Moderns Exhibit Extended
Through a special arrangement with the Brooklyn Museum, the Springfield Museums have extended the engagement of American Moderns, 1910-1960: From O’Keeffe to Rockwell at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts. The new closing date is now Sunday, September 7, allowing visitors an additional week to enjoy this unique and wide-ranging exhibit.
