Hooray for Heroes: A Virtual Activity Day from the Museums

The Springfield Museums present Hooray for Heroes, a virtual family engagement event launching August 15.

“The Museums are open, but we know not everyone is able (or ready) to visit in person,” said Larissa Murray, Director of Education at the Springfield Museums. “That’s OK! We still have lots of fun available!”

When the Museums closed in support of the public health effort to stem the spread of Covid-19, the staff pivoted quickly to offer resources online. The Museums created an Engage Page for the public as well as a Members-only Page that featured virtual Museums experiences. “Even now that the Museums are open, we continue to offer digital resources, programming, and events to keep in touch with all of our visitors, included those not quite ready to venture out,” Murray said.

Hooray for Heroes is a virtual event for the whole family. It is inspired by the exhibit Hall of Heroes, currently on display at the Wood Museum of Springfield History, along with a complementary exhibit Heroes in Healthcare: A Celebration of Springfield’s Medical Community.

“The activities we put together can enhance your visit—or stand alone,” said Jenny Powers, Family Engagement Coordinator at the Springfield Museums. “Our aim is to provide lots of activities for the mind and body.”

Activities will include but are not limited to:

  • Downloadable activity sheets that explore art, science, and culture, using materials easily found at home.
  • Videos, including one that features David White, illustrator of children’s books for Scholastic and comics for LEGO Magazine.
  • An opportunity to ask questions via the Super Hero Hotline!
  • Chances to win prizes by posting your artwork using #AtTheMuseums and #HoorayForHeroes.

Asked what she is most excited about sharing, Powers had a hard time deciding. “We are just super excited about helping families during this difficult time,” Powers said. “It’s been a stressful year. We want our visitors and friends to know we are here for them, ready to provide activities that spark curiosity and creativity and get both mind and body busy.”

Hooray for Heroes launches August 15 with video and activities available through the Springfield Museums website at https://springfieldmuseums.org/engage/heroes/. The Family Fun Program will continue to be available from that day onward. This event is free and donations will be accepted. The Museums are also offering a Hooray for Heroes Activity Kit that can be used on its own or in conjunction with this virtual family fun day.
