New Museum’s Great Hall Addition to be Named SIS Hall

The Springfield Museums are pleased to announce that the great hall addition which is part of the new Museum of Springfield History will be named SIS Hall.

The spacious, barrel-vaulted hall is being named in recognition of a $1,000,000 gift from the SIS Fund*. The museums received an initial gift of $725,000 from the fund in 2007 and an additional donation of $275,000 brings the total to $1,000,000.

“We’re very grateful to the SIS Fund for this generous gift and honored that we have the opportunity to name this impressive space after a business that has such a long history in the city,” said Joseph Carvalho, president of the Springfield Museums.

The Museum of Springfield History, which opened on October 10, 2009, presents exhibits that interpret Springfield history in the larger context of American history in the 19th and 20th centuries. Highlights include Indian Motocycles, Springfield-built automobiles, and displays of inventions and products created by Springfield area businesses. An exhibit tracing the history of the former Springfield Institute for Savings is being planned.

*The former Springfield Institute for Savings (SIS) was purchased by TD Banknorth.
