In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the ill-fated raid on Harpers Ferry, the Springfield Museums will host the panel discussion Emergence of a Radical: John Brown in Springfield, on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m., in the Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts. The program is free with museum admission.
Wood engravings by the celebrated, self-taught artist Asa Cheffetz are on view in the Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts through March 28, 2010 in the exhibition Asa Cheffetz: Master Wood Engraver.
The Springfield Science Museum’s large rooftop telescope will be open for public sky-gazing on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. The program will be held rain or shine. If it is overcast, a planetarium show will be presented in place of telescope viewing.
The Springfield Museums at the Quadrangle will present the following Museums à la Carte programs in October. The programs are held on Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. in the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts.
The new Museum of Springfield History will open to the public on Saturday, October 10, at 11 a.m. The 40,000-square-foot museum highlights Springfield’s rich history of innovation and entrepreneurship.
At the close of the annual meeting of the Springfield Museums on September 23, Chairman of the Board Richard B. Collins announced a $4.3 million gift from an anonymous donor. The donor has requested that the gift remain anonymous until the spring of 2010, at which time the Museum of Springfield History will be named in the donor’s honor.
Original paintings of antique waterfowl decoy will be on display in the Massachusetts 2010 Waterfowl Stamp Exhibit at the Springfield Science Museum from Sept. 18 through Oct. 4.
The Springfield Museums will participate in the fifth annual Museum Day on Saturday, September 26, 2009. Museum Day is presented by Smithsonian magazine. The Springfield Museums, along with other museums nationwide, will be open free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors.
The African Hall Subcommittee of the Springfield Museums will present the 18th annual Ubora Award and the 1st annual Ahadi Youth Award at a ceremony on Saturday, September 19, at 7 p.m., at the Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts at the Quadrangle. Ronald A. Copes has been selected to receive the Ubora Award and Myles Postell-Reynolds will receive the Ahadi Award.
Admission to the Springfield Museums will be free for everyone on Friday, September 4. The free admission will also include the special exhibition Grossology: The Impolite Science of the Human Body, which will close on September 6.
