Museums Announce 2013 Ubora and Ahadi Winners
The African Hall Subcommittee of the Springfield Museums will present the 22nd annual Ubora Award and the 5th annual Ahadi Youth Award at a ceremony on Saturday, September 21, at 6 pm, at the Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts at the Quadrangle. Springfield residents Katie and Bob Glasgow have been selected to receive the Ubora Award, and Raekwon Wheeler will receive the Ahadi Youth Award.
Museums to Host 10th Anniversary Car Show
Each fall, the Springfield Museums pay tribute to Springfield’s role in transportation history with their annual History on the Move car show. This fall’s event will take place on Saturday, September 7, from 9 am to 3 pm on the museum grounds at the Quadrangle. Pre-1980 cars, including vintage automobiles manufactured in Springfield, will be exhibited. Among the vehicles on display will be a 1922 Hupmobile Touring car, a 1942 US Air Force Jeep, a 1954 Kaiser Darrin, and many other makes and models.
Museum Tours and Lectures for September
The Springfield Museums’ monthly tours and lecture schedule kicks off in September with the return of the popular Thursday Museums à la Carte lectures, held weekly at 12:15 pm in the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts. Admission is $4 ($2 for members of the Springfield Museums); visitors are invited to bring lunch (cookies and coffee are provided). The programs are sponsored by Big Y World Class Market.
Stars Over Springfield Returns
The Springfield Science Museum’s large rooftop telescope will be open once again for public sky-gazing on Friday, September 6 at 7:30 pm as part of the Stars Over Springfield observatory series.
Museums to Host Sentinels and Nomads
Later this month, the Springfield Museums will unveil a new installation of whimsical sculptures created by New York –based artist Don Porcaro. The exhibit, titled Sentinels and Nomads: Imaginative Sculpture by Don Porcaro, will be on display in the Community Gallery of the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts from August 27, 2013 through June 1, 2014. MassMutual is the Springfield Museums 2013 Premier Sponsor.
Free Fun Friday at Springfield Museums
There will be no charge to visit the Springfield Museums on Friday, August 16. The free admission is made possible by a grant from the Highland Street Foundation in Newton, MA. The “Free Fun Fridays” program was launched five years ago with 10 museums participating and has grown to include over 60 institutions across the commonwealth this year.
Summer Spectacular Wraps up August 16
The Springfield Museums’ “Summer Spectacular” series of activities and family-friendly performances wraps up for the summer during the week of August 12. The six-week series includes live performances, animal demonstrations, and educational activities designed to appeal to a wide range of ages. All programs and performances are free with admission unless otherwise noted. On Friday, August 16, general admission to the Museums is free to the general public, as part of the statewide “Free Fun Friday” series sponsored by Highland Street Foundation. Artists begin work on Art Picnic tables to be unveiled at upcoming Community Picnic
Art Picnic, a two-week community art project designed to beautify Springfield and give local art students the chance to collaborate with established artists, kicks off on July 29 on the Springfield Museums campus and downtown on Main Street. Visitors can watch local artists and student interns transform ordinary picnic tables into unique works of art. The project is funded through the Art & Soles Fund of the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts and supported by the Springfield Business Improvement District.
