The Springfield Museums will celebrate their annual Holiday Gala on Thursday, December 5, 2013. The Gala provides a wonderful opportunity to both individuals and corporate donors to help underwrite the many innovative exhibits and educational programs offered by the Springfield Museums. The event is sold out, with over 400 tickets purchased.

Massachusetts Cultural Council approves new cultural district in Springfield as suggested names are narrowed
From MASSLIVE - The Massachusetts Cultural Council on Friday approved the city’s request to create a cultural district in the heart of Springfield, geared to promote local attractions and expand opportunities.
Teacher Workshop features Holocaust Liberators
On Tuesday, November 19, the Springfield Museums will host a teacher workshop titled Bearing Witness: An Evening with Springfield’s Holocaust Liberators from 4-6 pm at the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History. The workshop is sponsored by United Bank, Hampden Bank, and the Adolph Katten Family Foundation.
Museums Host Japanese Consulate Ceremony
On Friday, November 8, the Springfield Museums will host a delegation from the Japanese Consulate that will award local resident Sue Root the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays from the Japanese government.
Museums to Display Rare Antique Toys and Holiday Photographs
Next week, the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts will unveil two exhibits to help usher in the holiday season. A Peek Inside Santa’s Sack: Vintage Cast Iron Toys and Season’s Greetings: Photographer’s Holiday Cards both open on November 12, 2013 and run through January 5, 2014. MassMutual is the 2013 Premier Sponsor of the Springfield Museums.
Museums Offer Free Admission to Veterans, Programs for Families on 11/11
In honor of Veteran’s Day, the Springfield Museums is offering free admission to current or retired members of the military on Monday, November 11. Although the Museums campus is normally closed on Mondays, all four museums and the Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden will be open for families and visitors to enjoy on the holiday.
Springfield Museums announce Lectures/Tours for November
The Springfield Museums’ monthly tour and lecture schedule continues in November with the popular Thursday Museums à la Carte lectures, held weekly at 12:15 p.m. in the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts. Admission is $4 ($2 for members of the Springfield Museums); visitors are invited to bring lunch (cookies and coffee are provided). The programs are sponsored by Big Y World Class Market. The Springfield Museums’ Culture & Cocktails series continues with a special evening of “Martinis, Jazz, and the Roaring 20’s” on Thursday, November 7 from 5-8 pm at the Wood Museum of Springfield History.
Talk on Comet ISON featured at Museums' Stars Program
The Springfield Science Museum’s large rooftop telescope will be open for public sky gazing on Friday, November 1 at 7:30 pm as part of the Stars Over Springfield observatory series. The program takes place on the first Friday of each month from September through May, and features an introductory talk on topics such as space exploration, seasonal sights of the night sky, current astronomical research, or upcoming events like eclipses or comet appearances.
Museum Lecture Explores “Erotic Appetites”
On Sunday, November 3, 2013, the Springfield Museums will host a lecture by John Varriano titled Erotic Appetites: Food, Art, and Sex in the Italian Renaissance. The talk will take place at 2 pm in the Davis Auditorium of the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, and is free with museum admission.
Museums Announce Call for Artists, Offer No-Cost Materials This Saturday
The Springfield Museums is now accepting design plans from artists, fashion or costume designers, students and community members for a fantastical large-scale exhibition titled Steampunk Springfield: Re-Imagining an Industrial City.
